Cometh the Hour, Cometh the Witch – What Kind of Witch are You and Does it Matter?

By Isabella @TheWandCarver

[I wrote this originally in 2018 but as it seems to have stood the test of time, with a small number of changes, I am republishing it to the our new blog spot here]

If you don’t like confrontational subjects and wish to walk away now, I quite understand as things may get ugly here in the next few paragraphs.  Only because I feel very opinionated about things that I have been reading in my Google News briefings of late.  Most recently a Washington Post story [I’ll read anything, me] called “An Entire Generation is Losing Hope.  Enter the Witch”.  That doesn’t bother me.

This writer attributes the loss of hope people are feeling to the increase in witchly spiritualism.  Nothing wrong with that either.  He goes on to say that Witchcraft is “generally an occultism with a paganist bent, often with an emphasis on feminine power.” He then goes on to say, “The term can be used to describe anything from astrology to Wicca to older syncretic traditions such as VooDoo and Santeria.” Hang about!  NO! You cannot tar anything remotely Pagan with the same Witchcraft brush, you uninformed being!  Firstly, not ALL astrologers have any remote interest in Witchcraft so please don’t insult the ones who do not. And, all Wiccans are not Witches, either! Not only all of that but NOT ALL WITCHES ARE FEMININE!! Men are witches and they may work with feminine power, but they also work with masculine power… come to think on it, woman can do both as well. Apparently, Mr Ill-Informed has not read that Wicca is now a recognised religion although it is not set in stone into UK law just now, but in the US since 2015 some areas of the US and the US Army do recognise Wicca fully as a religion:

Military Courts of Justice in the U.S. have also found Wicca to be a valid religion, deserving of protection under the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution. In United States v. Phillips, (42 M.J. 346) in 1995) the concurring opinion by Judge Wiss stated: “First, Wicca is a socially recognized religion.  It is is acknowledged as such by the Army.  From Religious Tolerance

It is a religion, it is not necessarily Witchcraft,  although there are practitioners of the Wicca faith whom are Witches.

from Google images

Next, he goes on to say that Witches are an eclectic group – yes! He gets a biscuit for he is correct here.  We are very diverse and bring many things learned from many kinds of practise from all over the World to the Witchy table.  So, his next remarks threw me into fits of laughter and fits of anger at the same time and that is what you call a tempest in a tea pot, my friends! Mr Doesn’t Know He’s Born says, “There are even Christian Witches – a new tradition that seems to have cropped up within the past five years.”  How many years??  Only five??  Begging your arty pardon, sir, but my Nana was a Christian Witch… in the late 1800’s all the way to her death in 1977! No, of course he wouldn’t know my Nana – or the thousands of Witches like her who were called cunning women in their time.  When they gathered their herbs, they prayed over them. Intermingled with their spells were religious litanies.  And they went to church every Sunday…unless like my Nana, she got where she only went for Christmas, Easter, and Mothering Sunday.  And long before my Nana these are the same kind of Witches whom were dug out by the Witchfinder General and whomever the Witchfinder of American Witches was and then burned them at the stake, buried them alive, drowned them, and more insufferable acts performed upon them even though they all went to church every Sunday and most likely believed in God.  So how very dare he say that Christian Witches are a new thing?  Aren’t journalists taught to get all their facts straight before putting pen to paper or fingertips to keyboards?

Sigh.  Sorry, a little edgy after reading about all the sudden interest in all things witchy lately from not only this author but others as well.  The upsurge in Witchcraft interest is probably partially down to a new Sabrina film which interests me not, but more importantly, because men and women are losing hope in all else because of government, climate change disasters, and all kinds of mayhem in the world and getting no help from whomever is their God…or so they believe. One thing I have learned is, no matter who you believe in, the Divine do NOT wave a magick wand over the problem just like that.  It took time to get into the messes we’re in and it will take time to get out of them….and if we aren’t given some degree of hardship, how are we to appreciate the good when it comes?

This means, of course, everyone whom is feeling the pain of the world’s problems must bear the pain and do their bit to fix the problems, no matter how small.

But what good is magick if it doesn’t help capture the attention of a Higher Source for help? Or to make the Universe send that Abundance that so many say the Universe has for our asking?  Magick is not worth a tuppence.  Not worth a bean.  Never will be unless you make some changes first.  No, I am not talking about changing your wardrobe to a witchy one or anything superficial.  The changes must come from within…did your mum or your therapist ever tell you this?  Well, it is true.  The first and most important thing you must relinquish is your Ego.  Ego really has no place in magick or any other situation.  Ego is the part of you which makes you think you know everything when indeed you do not.  Ego is the thing which makes you become angry when you don’t get your way.  Ego also makes you give up if something doesn’t go your way.  I can’t spend a blog meant for something else explaining why so if you want to know what I mean, please see Eckhart Tolle. And, if you want to see an Ego on steroids, see this other fellow I shall not mention.

You also must have a healthy belief in your power.  We all have great power, believe it or not.  It is how we tap into it and own it that makes the difference.  There is much discipline to making your power work for you.  Oh yes, I know many whom have only begun as a Witch and their first spell worked.  Then, in a lot of cases they had a series of flops.  You can’t go into spell work with doubts or disbelief in yourself.  But you said I need to drop my Ego…yes, I did and Ego and belief in yourself and your abilities have nothing at all in common.  There is a huge difference between standing on your pedestal proclaiming yourself to be the greatest Witch in the World and simple trust in yourself.  It is all you need. And if the next spell doesn’t work, keep learning and experimenting until you find the way to create one that will.

Discipline, discipline, discipline!  Don’t cut corners.  Long ago, Witches/Cunning Folk grew all their own herbs or wild-gathered them, as many of us do now.  When they harvested them there was a time of day which corresponded to the planet which ruled the herb being harvested and so they only harvested during that herb’s planetary hours.  They also many times sang a religious litany or prayer during the harvest.  Whilst preparing the herb for a spell or for use in healing, there were many prayers said over it.  And this was carried out each time.  There were prayers and such, even chanting the Psalms, for every part of their craft.  Nowadays I’m sure many the Witch – or the neo-Witch – doesn’t care to spend hours preparing his/her/their herbs or other needs like tools in order to use them.  Still, it is important and a good discipline.  I can say from experience that my spell work in which I prepared for properly have all worked very well.   You don’t necessarily need to chant Biblical verses over your herbs and so forth unless you do this already, but you can find a way which works for you and discipline yourself to do so every time for best results.

Lastly, believe!  Not only in yourself but in the Higher Source[s] whom you put your faith into.  Trust this Source.  Trust the Universe.  Yes, I know…when things go wrong, people’s first reaction is often “the Universe is against me”.  I can assure you this is not true.  Try working with the Universe, no matter if it is good or bad and see what happens.  You must realise the bad things are not the Universe taking a dig at you, but a lesson to be learned.  Does anyone ever say “thank you” to the Universe when things go right or excellently?  No, didn’t think so…but you should do.  Whatever or whomever is the driving force of the Universe does enjoy appreciation.  Especially when things seem overwhelmingly bad.  Remembering the good things and saying thank you for them never goes amiss with the Universe.  Nor does thanking the Universe for the bad things if you can see your way to understanding that bad is not always the Universe’s fault but that we are truly masters of our own destiny and nine times out of ten it is ourselves who cause our own problems.  Obviously, that does not apply to every bad thing.  And don’t have my head on a plate because I say to be thankful for bad things, for particularly if a lesson is learned and adhered to in future, it is something to be grateful for.

I’m not trying to teach you to suck eggs…or in this case, to know how to be a Witch.  There are loads of books for that, and journalists who think they know everything there is to know about being a Witch or why one wishes to become a Witch.  I will be the first to hold my hand up and say unequivocally that I do not know everything about being a Witch even after some fifty-odd years and  having learned everything I know from my cunning woman Nana. But even at my age, I still love to learn.  And, I have learned that discipline, self-belief, trusting in the Divine Parents and Universe, being grateful, and letting go of my Ego have all made me a much better Witch and person.  A happier person…a more caring person.

So, what kind of Witch are you? And, does it matter? Of course, it does.  I don’t mean whether you are a Hedge Witch, a Solitary Witch, an Eclectic Witch…Are you a Witch who is grounded in his/her/their beliefs and puts faith into their Higher Source and in themselves? Are you a Witch who believes they already knows everything or a Witch whom is willing to learn all they can, no matter the age? And if you are one of the many “neo-Witches” whom have entered the realm of the occult, welcome.  We are happy to have you if you are doing so for the right reasons.  Upon entering any kind of belief system, we must not enter into unadvisedly or because we feel it is the only way.  And don’t enter believing you will suddenly be performing spells that will save the world.  Still, if one person could do, I will not hold them back! But to enter because you felt you identified with Sabrina or the Charmed Ones could possibly be a fading phase you will go through.  It would be unwise to purchase loads of Witchcraft items if this is the case.

If I ruffled a few feathers in this blog, then my job is well done.  I wrote this to get people thinking.  I want you to know, beyond a doubt, what you expect of Witchcraft as well as of yourself before you enter this door.  It is a beautiful world to live in and one in which you can bring much good about from, if you are ready.  I hope that if you do, you will take heed to my above advice.  It could save you from throwing in the wand so to speak in future.  Good luck and warmest blessings to your new future!

Please feel free to comment, I do answer to all. Many thanks for reading and warmest blessings to all whom this way wander x

How do I deal with fear?

By Isabella @TheWandCarver

Instagram:  @thewandcarver

How do I deal with fear, indeed.  Many of us, no matter how intelligent… no matter how ‘tough’, no matter how young or how old, we all seem to have that common denominator:  Fear.  And often I am asked, ‘How do I get rid of fear?’.  You don’t, my friends.  In case you don’t know, fear is one of those built-in things we have that, for no matter how hard we try, we can never 100% rid ourselves of it.  But that’s alright.

“You’re mad”, you are thinking now… “it’s alright to go round feeling as though fear just hangs over you like a rain cloud?” No, not quite that way, but I shall explain.

People have had fear built into them since the first of mankind walked the Earth.  It was necessary to keep them sharp and on watch for natural enemies like huge animals what might eat them to other tribal people who might want to take over their patch.  But early mankind was most likely much simpler thinking and once they had seen off the object of their fear, they relaxed and felt happy.  They did not go back into their cave or hut and ruminate about the next thing that could happen to ruin their happiness.  As far as they were concerned, it was sorted. Until the next time.

As time progressed and religion began taking shape, early Pagans feared their Gods and Goddesses.  Anyone would do when your God was the God of lightning and storms.  The first time you saw a mate struck by a bolt of lightning, you would be fearful of that God, wouldn’t you?  Perhaps that is where sacrificing one of your fellow tribe came from…Let’s give Thor/Indra/Zeus one of our own first and perhaps he won’t take another one in that manner again.  The Ancient Ones had to kind of make it up as they went in many cases but suffice it to say, it is probably how they handled that kind of fear.  But much like their ancient ancestors they would also feel fear when fighting off enemies; then, they would go back to a relaxed and happy state once they won the battle.  Not many would sit at home and start worrying about the next time he or she had to go to war.

The point I’m making is, until recent-ish history, say, over the last two-thousand or so years, people were able to deal with each fear as it came and then relax – for a while.  People began living in fear in earnest when Theodosius passed legislation prohibiting all pagan worship [c.392] and it did not improve when the Crusades began c.1095 and the Inquisition began [12th century].  We then added to our natural enemies, occasional human enemies, and fear of our Gods with the fear of literally everyone, for no one really knew who would be against or for them.  We were becoming trapped into an endless cycle of constant fear which has had devastating results upon mankind individually and together. Just look at what we have been going through the last three years.

Is it any wonder we are fearful?

“The first duty of a man is subduing Fear” [Thomas Carlyle c.1846]

So… how are we meant to subdue Fear? People pray for it to go away.  It won’t.  People think they are not brave if they are fearful… not true at all because if you can still push yourself to do a thing no matter how afraid you are then you are considered very brave.

“Human beings face a multitude of difficulties and dangers which must be confronted if they are to live a human life.  The human body is extremely vulnerable, always exposed to the possibility of accident, illness, pain, and death.  Yet, people are not usually obsessed with these undoubted dangers, and life would be scarcely possible if they were.  All pleasure in life would be lost were we overwhelmed by all the actual and possible dangers that surround us.”  ~ John Casey

In Mr Casey’s Pagan Virtue: An Essay in Ethics [1990], he goes on to describe how he “might” rid himself of fear by virtually pretending there was no danger from the item which causes the fear in him.  We all know that is no good.  If the spider which you are pretending to be not dangerous really is, then you are not allowing Fear to do his job.  You might want to back away from that spider!  This appears to make one think it is alright to cheat Fear of his due.  I’m afraid Fear may redouble his efforts on future scares in that case.  Casey goes on to say that he might do better at ridding himself of fear by having more self-confidence.  Ah… well, in theory, that sounds smashing, still, in practise, it is impossible.  I know a good many people with bags of self-confidence, however, they are visited by Fear now and again.  As well it should be. And I won’t go on with Mr Casey’s dissertation as to when he begins saying that he must develop anger to dissuade Fear, I closed the book.

What Mr Casey seems not to have learned by 1990 is that Fear is a part of everyone.  Fear is not to be “gotten rid of”.  Would you chuck out the part of yourself that causes you not to step off a ledge? The part of you that says “RUN!” when you need to get out of the way of something or someone barrelling toward you?  The part of you that stops you from getting into a car with a drinking driver?  I would not.  Not even when it has nearly driven me round the bend on a couple of occasions.  But that was not Fear’s fault.  It was mine for allowing it to rule my thoughts over everything else that I knew was common sense.  Too much of a good thing can be bad for you, clearly, if you let it be.

So, what is the answer?

I think I have one plausible answer.  It works for me.  It does take a bit of getting used to and it needs a bit of discipline.  It is not a one-shot attempt kind of thing.  You see, Fear is not a separate human-type individual sitting your shoulder, still, Fear does hear and listens and has his own personality of sorts.  Mine tends to be quite clingy at times and I have come to think that maybe he needs me more than I need him.  I guess that’s why he hangs around longer than he should.  But on to my method.

Quote by Tim Ferris, Artist unknown

I talk to Fear.  Aloud.

Fear, my friend.  I know you are a part of me.  We need not try to part ways, I have come to realise that yes, I need you.  You have been there at the right time for me and I do appreciate this.  However, it seems to me you tend to overstay your welcome and I find myself feeling fearful over some rather silly things.  Now you and I both know this is unnecessary.  What if I get fed up and stop listening to you and end up in trouble?  I would say you weren’t doing a very good job of things then, wouldn’t you?  So, let’s do this… you go sit over away from me and wait until you see some real danger.  When you do, please notify me. Until then, please stop waving small matters and imagined matters in my path.  This does me harm if nothing else.  I can sort out these little things without you.  Thank you so much for your real help in past and future.  We are friends, we just don’t need to be in each other’s pockets.

Afterwards, I feel absolutely wonderful.  I know he is still lurking but that is a good thing.  I am sure I will need him again in future.  But not because the rash on my arm might be something deadly – which it isn’t, or because of a million other little things that would only take a bit of common sense to fix.  This may or may not work for you.  If you really want it to, it will.  You’ll need to be assertive but kind.  No need shouting at Fear. And you may have to do this every day for a while until you get your Fear put into his place.  But the thing is, he will cool down and leave you in peace more and more.

I would love to read your comments on how you deal with your fear in the comments below!  Everyone has different ways of doing things and it’s always good to have varieties of ways.  Many thanks for reading and warmest blessings to all whom this way wander x

Happy Valentine’s Day!

By Isabella @TheWandCarver

Happy day of Love to all! To all the Lovers, want-to-be Lovers, who need to be loved, loved and lost, I hope you find the most important love of all…self-love.  For, without self-love, we are not terribly loveable. If we can’t like/love ourselves, who else can? Self-love has NOTHING to do with Ego, my darlings. Leave Ego at the door, pull up a mirror, and look into your eyes.  Look deeply at the person in there.  He or she is worth love as much and maybe more than anyone else is in the world.

sunset-hands-love-woman

No matter what you’ve done, or perceived yourself to have done, that makes you feel unloveable, why not let today be the day where you forgive yourself…talk to yourself as a friend, give yourself the good advice you would give to a loved friend or family member. Be kind to yourself and enjoy your own company. Tell yourself you love yourself. Don’t stop at today, carry on loving yourself every day and you will find that you can smile more, nod your head at passers-by with a smile, take better care of yourself, and perhaps find yourself more loved by all who know you.  I hope so.

If love does make the World go round, I think it should go around much more smoothly if we all love ourselves as we should, don’t you?  So, Happy Valentine’s Day, dear readers. I love you ❤

Promises, Promises

It’s funny (metaphorically speaking) how something seems to become a well-worn pattern in your life that you can never fully escape. For me, that is the “Promiser”.

“I promise to…” does not necessarily need to be spoken. When I am told (repeatedly by someone I think I have reason to trust) that said person will do something, I believe it. It’s my one weakness.

My friend, Diane, from day one of school. We got on like a house on fire in every way and were best mates for many years…until. You see, Diane was one of those who would make grand statments and then forget…or never really mean to fulfill those “promises”. During August when almost everybody went on holiday (apart from mine..we did occasional day trips instead) Diane’s family would pack up and off to somewhere nice. Diane always promised to “bring me back something”. I didn’t expect it, and my manners would have never allowed me to ask for anything, if it had occurred to me.

So, of course, when you’re seven, this seems quite intoxicating to know you might be getting a trifle from such exotic places as Blackpool..or..oh, dare I hope, Brighton? You have to know I didn’t really get out much. So, the first several times Diane came back empty handed, I didn’t fret, just went on our way being best mates. I would have been chuffed with a shell or a handfull of beach sand.

Sadly, not even that would be the case because, quite plainly, Diane FORGOT! Yes, every time, she would come back having forgotten not just my “gift” but ME! Here I sat for 2 weeks and nothing to do because I didn’t want to have too much fun without Diane around to share it with…but hey! She was having the time of her life wherever she was and had the audacity to “forget” ME! Not sparing a thought for her very best friend…whilst I pined away for her. That finally occurred to me one day when we were about 13. That’s when she said, “We’re going on our holibobs next week! I’ll bring you something back!” Oh, no she didn’t!

Drawing a deep positivity breath and exhaling the negative, I simply put to her, “Diane, don’t tell me this anymore. It never happens. It has gotten to where it hurts my feelings. Just go and have fun. You can tell me all about your trip when you get  back.” I could have as well had slapped her face by the look on it. This is when she turned on me and calling me a selfish so and so, stormed off, out of my life, and out of our friendship. Just like that. Oh and how she could blank me after she returned to school! This went on til…well, it has never ended.

Lesson learned. If you tell someone you’ll do something, move the heavens and earth to do so or just keep your lip zipped in first place. And, try harder to catch on to the “promisers” early days before you fall for their “grand statements” enough to let yourself be hurt. I suppose it’s something I’ve never really gotten past. And, with it happening again so recently I just had to finally write about it. As The Who put it “We won’t be fooled again!”

The Magic of Holly

English Holly, Ilex aquifolium

The Holly and the Ivy
When they are both full grown,
Of all the trees that are in the wood,
The holly wears the crown.
~ traditional carol

In his book The White Goddess, the author Robert Graves proposed that the mythological figure of the Holly King represents one half of the year, while the other is personified by his counterpart and adversary the Oak King: the two battle endlessly as the seasons turn. At Midsummer the Oak King is at the height of his strength, whilst the Holly King is at his weakest. The Holly King begins to regain his power, and at the Autumn Equinox, the tables finally turn in the Holly King’s favour; his strength peaks at Midwinter. They are both vegetation Gods/Deities, connected to fertility and the seasons. They battle each other year after year to reign supreme.

Holly is the tree of the 8th month of Celtic Tree calendar, July 8th – August 4th and the 8th consonant of the Ogham alphabet, Tinne or Tiene. Deities are Lugh, Tannus, and Thor. Ruling planets are Mars and Saturn and its element is Fire. The powers of Holly include protection, anti-lightning, luck, and dream magick.

“Holly reminds us of the need to calm our emotions, if we are to reach wise decisions about our situation. The often painful consequences of our actions are brought to the surface for examination, and calm acceptance of our responsibility is required. We are reminded of the need to view ourselves, as well as others, in the light of compassion and unconditional love. Like the Hanged Man of the Tarot, holly represents personal sacrifice in order to gain something of greater value.” – The Wisdom of Trees by Jane Gifford

English Holly keppen wand ~ photo by i.macy

“Holly wood was used by the ancients in the construction of spear shafts, and as the spiny leaves show, it is well prepared for battle. A symbol of firmness and masculine energy, the holly endows those born under its sign with an equally well-prepared nature. You have a strong connection to the earth, amazing physical strength, and the ability to direct your energy in a balanced even flow. This stability gives you a generosity of spirit ad a very matter-of-fact solidness that others will respect, admire, and rely on. Before you engage in any battle, look inside for understanding and respect for your opponents.” – Written by Kim Rogers-Gallagher, and Llewellyn’s Witches’ Datebook 2000

The Holly wand pictured above has been sold a while back. Sometimes it is difficult for me to get Holly branches, however, we have a bit left and do make some other things with it such as amulets and talismans. Please check by often to see if we have a Holly charm that would be helpful to you.

Love Spells

The 14th of February is nearing;  love is in the air…new beginnings are beckoning. Imbolc has arrived with the promise of Spring soon-to-come and not only are little seedlings stirring in the Earth, awaiting their birth into a sunny World, but the stirrings of passion in our hearts is making many folk – at least those who aren’t in relationships – want to take action.  Is it any wonder that at this time of year I get more requests for love spells than at any other time of the year?

Before we go any further, I don’t do love spells.  I don’t recommend them at all.  I really burned myself several years ago by doing a love spell for myself (and I don’t mean that I burned myself on a candle!).  I really, really thought he was THE one and I would do anything, within reason, to ensure he wanted to be with me as well.  So…a simple little candle spell done and 7 years later, I was still trying to get AWAY from him.  Oh yes, the candle spell worked a treat.  In fact, too well! Problem was, I couldn’t end it when it was physically necessary to do so.  I have always known that every spell needs a “get out” clause, but in candle magick I rarely think to do so.  I’ve only just finished scrapping the rot from that relationship from my boots and it’s been over 10 years gone. But..you really want love and I’m here to help .

I’m not going to put a spell into anyone’s hands that is intended for the attraction/love of one specific person only.  It would be tantamount to handing a suicidal person a noose.  Either way, someone is going to be hurt badly.  My recommendation is to anyone wishing to find love and needing a bit of a hand with that from the Universe is this:

1.  Make a list – list all the qualities you feel you want most from a future partner.  Not just how you would like the partner to treat you, but be so specific that you choose the colour of his or her eyes, if you like. Take your time writing this list, add to it, take away from it, but before you go any further with your spellwork, be absolutely certain that everything on your list is complete and to your liking.  DO NOT give this person a name.  You are NOT wishing for a certain person, only the sort of person you want to attract. However, being dead specific is the only way the Universe is to know exactly what you want in your future partner.

2.  Sleep with this list under your pillow for a week along with a small pouch filled with dried or fresh rose buds, lavender, and vervain.  All 3 herbs are coincidentally for love, however, all 3 offer protection, healing, and luck. Rose and lavender have the power to give you a psychic edge as well..this can help you know when Mr or Mrs Right comes into your life.

3.  Buy a supply of small pink candles – a week’s worth – and burn one each day during the Venus hour(s)** of each day or night, at your convenience, focusing upon your intent to bring love into your life.  Also have on hand a small bottle of rose or lavender oil to annoint yourself & your candle with. Whilst burning the candle, please do not think of a specific person, only think about the qualities you’ve written down.  Small chime/spell candles are usually only about 50p each, perhaps more depending upon where you buy them and it normally takes about an hour for one to burn completely down.  And by all means, carve hearts onto them with a pin if you like. As your candle burns, visualise yourself being loved, cared for, treated with respect, adored. Let the love you could feel for another flow throughout your body and allow yourself to feel it as though you have already found your new love.

For a full week, your main intention is to bring love into your life.  You may carry the herbal pouch with you throughout your day if you choose to.  Do try and keep your mind upon whatever work you must do, still, on your own time, allow the feeling of love and intention rise within you as much as possible.

You will need to keep your mind and eyes open at all times…just because he or she is not the spitting image of the person you have in your mind’s eye, don’t discount those whom aren’t…sometimes the most unlikely on the face of it all is the most likely to be just right.

And please remember – do not do any of this specifically for a certain person’s love.  As the herbalist & writer, Scott Cunningham, once said, “Capturing a person with love magic of this sort is little short of psychic rape”.  Here’s hoping you’ll meet the kindest, gentlest, and most loving partner this month you could ever wish for and may you both be happy ever-after.

Happy Valentine’s Day and  Blessed be )O(

** you can find the Planetary hours table here: http://www.lunarium.co.uk/planets/hours.jsp to find what time the Venus hour(s) are for each day.  If you find it inconvenient to burn your daily candle during the Venus hour each day, simply carve the Venus planetary symbol onto your candle with a pin.

Sometimes you really do have to give up.

I’ve been tearing around like a blue-arsed fly for the last few months, trying so hard to kick-start a fledgling business, be a Mum and a Nana, sort out and organise things, worrying that Yule-tide would catch me in the usual state of panic. Things continually kept going awry, I began to become uncustomarily impatient, worry set in, and one day recently I snapped.  It had to happen.

No, I didn’t do anything untoward, really…just had myself a right row with myself and felt as though I could not, perhaps even should not, cope with what I’ve been trying to achieve.  However, it became quite clear that, I really SHOULD do what I’m doing, just at a slower, more relaxed pace.  And please for the love of all things good and true…just allow Divine Spirit take over for a change!  Take the time out to do what I was created to do….create!  Enjoy my life, create, and love what I do.  I’ve had quite enough of shoving it down everyone’s neck.  I just want to make things, let my artistic self run amok, and not give a monkey’s if I’m not in Google’s top ten sites.  I will be someday.  Just believe.

So, I’m letting go. I’m not really giving up.  I’m not planning on going anywhere.  Just going to allow the Universe to guide me again.  Take the time to write, make jewellery, paint, draw, create things.  Love.

It is time to let go and believe.  Things will fall into place

Shadowscapes tarot ~ The High Priestess
my High Priestess card, Shadowscapes

The High Priestess

I was gifted the Shadowscapes Tarot deck for Yule by my lovely eldest daughter and since, I have taken anywhere from one to 6 or 7 cards per week to meditate over and to simply try and “feel” their meaning before I start filling my head with all the “book learning”. Recently, whilst working with The High Priestess (also, keep in mind that I hold my thumb over the names of each card so I won’t know what it is – Shadowscapes is very different from most tarot decks I’ve used) and she spoke to me:

“I can see your deepest secrets, dear
I know your fondest desires, it’s true.
I know how to make them appear,
The only ingredient is you”

This deck had called to me prior to receiving it as a gift. It filled me with absolute peace and knowing just by holding the package. I think the High Priestess was calling out to me as she is a favourite now and so very helpful! Just thought I’d share. Do you have a deck that does this to you? I think everyone does in their lives….funny it took me all these years to find mine! Or, did it find me? hmm…..

Spells for Money and Business

First Posted on 06/02/2014 by Isabella via speakingofwitchwands.net

Right.  So, this is the month of Love and I’ve written how to (hopefully) meet the man or woman of your dreams.  I probably wouldn’t be writing at this time concerning money spells if I had not been asked.  When one person asks, you tell them alone.  But, when three or more ask, you blog about it

Image
found on Google

You really don’t have to be a dyed-in-the-wool generational Witch to perform a spell.  And, if you EVER pay a “Witch” to perform a spell for you, then shame on her/ him /them.  You will definitely get what you pay for – in some form or another.  And, it may not be what you want.  No self-respecting Witch will ask for money these days for his or her spellwork.  Oh yes, the “cunning women” of old did do.  Seamen paid many an old dear for safe journeys by sea once upon a time.  You can bet that she did her job right, or there would be a very angry sailor come a-calling when he returned [if he returned]! Nowadays, if you Paypal your dosh to someone for a spell, you can’t very well go looking for the hag what took your money and did nothing for you, can you? So, lesson Number one:  Don’t pay for spells.

I’ll tell you what works, for nothing.  If it doesn’t work for you, then the one thing you may be lacking is Intention.  No matter if you’re doing a full-blown, cast a circle, banging drums and ringing bells spell or just lighting a candle and chanting, it is only with the strongest of Intention that anything will work.  You really, really have to want and believe in something to have it.  Lesson Number two:  Faith.

So, you see…wishes really do work, if you wish them hard enough

I will assume that whomever is reading this blog is not favourable toward casting a circle and doing the entire Witch bit.  That’s alright.  I’ve had as many non-circle spells work as the ones with all the bells and whistles.  You may need to purchase a few items locally in order to perform your spell, the main ones being:

For money spells: either a large green candle that can burn for an hour over 7 or 8 days, or 7 or 8 green small spell/chime candles which can burn for an hour each

For business spell: small gold chime/spell candle

herbs:  cedar wood, dried orange peel, cinnamon, ginger, bay leaf, cloves, maple bark, ash bark, galangel root (all have money & success drawing attributes, choose any 3 for your talisman)

oils:  Patchouli, Orange, Ginger, Bergamot, Clove

crystals:  green aventurine, pyrite (pyrite is good for sitting near ones computer for business)

And, rest assured, you don’t need to purchase everything I list here.  After you have read this entire blog, you can make your choices according to which spell you prefer to use, then buy what you need accordingly.  I don’t want you spending a shedload of money to try to receive a shedload of money

For Money:

Simple things you can do:

1.  Carry a piece of cedar wood or ginger in your wallet, money purse, or pocket to draw wealth
2.  Keep a small jar of alfalfa in your food cupboard and you’ll never be without food
3.  Rub Patchouli oil on your money, sprinkle it in your handbag or pockets

An easy little money spell anyone can do is to take a handfull of coins and place on the floor (not where dogs, young children, or people thinking they’ve found spare change to use at the laundrette can pick them up) whilst chanting (at least three times) “Money on the floor brings money in the door”.

This one takes a bit more work:

This must be done on the proper Day and Hour of Jupiter**. I will explain more in a bit. You will need a Green Candle and a White Candle. The Green candle represents the money, and the white candle represents you. You may draw/carve money symbols on the green candle (£ or $ or whatever you use in your country) and  then annoint the candles with a money-drawing oil, such as Orange, Patchouli, Clove, Bergamot, or Ginger,  thinking of your desire for money to come to you. Set the candles on your altar or table 8 inches apart. After doing this, say…(saying it 3 times or more is best)

“Money, money come to me
In abundance three times three
May I be enriched in the best of ways
Harming none on its way
This I accept, so mote it be
Bring me money three times three!”

You need to start this Spell on a Thursday which is the Day of Jupiter and at the proper hour of Jupiter for your Latitude and Longitude. Repeat this for 8 days. Each day move the White Candle one inch closer to the Green Candle.  Allow the candles to burn for one hour before extinguishing and during this time, visualise money coming into your life. When the Candles touch on the eighth day, your spell is finished. This will end the Spell on a Thursday as well.

Each day you should find the proper Planetary Hour of Jupiter and do the Spell at that time. This will give it much more power. Jupiter is associated with money. Be sure you visualise the money pouring in from the Universe, but make sure you imagine a source of where that money will come from… and don’t ask for the Lotto…. it’s not going happen.

**** you can find the Planetary hours table here: http://www.lunarium.co.uk/planets/hours.jsp to find what time the Jupiter hour(s) are for each day.

I may as well give you a list of which days and their corresponding planet:

Monday – Moon (voyages, travel, anything to do with water)
Tuesday – Mars (to acquire courage, overthrow enemies)
Wednesday – Mercury (answers about the future, divination)
Thursday – Jupiter  (money)
Friday – Venus  (love)
Saturday – Saturn (to acquire learning)
Sunday – Sun  (business)

Keep these in a convenient place or memorise them as they will be used again.

Business Spells –

Firstly, whilst Jupiter (Thursday) is the best day for doing a money spell, funnily enough, Sunday is the best day for business spells.  As you may have come to expect by now, the Planetary hours are a huge part of this plan.  See the link above for the Planetary hour of the Sun for the Sunday on which you plan to do your Business spell.  They do change daily as the days hours are always adjusting by minutes.  If you get too confused, just ask, I’ll try to explain.

When you have chosen the Sunday and the Planetary hour of the Sun during which to do this spell, collect beforehand these items:

A small pouch
A coin – a 50p piece or a quarter or whatever you use in your country
Patchouli oil
small green aventurine crystal
herbs:  any 3 of the above-mentioned herbs
gold spell candle
patchouli incense
a tiny bowl of water
a tiny bowl of salt

Place the herbs, green aventurine, and coin into the pouch and drop 3 drops of Patchouli oil over the items inside.  Draw the pouch closed and tie it.  This is never to be opened again.  Pass the pouch (now a talisman) over the bowl of salt and say, “Element of Earth, cleanse this talisman”

Pass the talisman over the the incense and say, “Element of Air, cleanse this talisman”
Pass  it over the burning candle and say, “Element of Fire, cleanse this talisman”
Pass it over the bowl of water and say, “Element of Water, cleanse this talisman”

Blow on the talisman three times, draw in the air an equal-armed cross over the talisman and say, “Thou art cleansed, consecrated, and empowered in the name of (God, the Divine Source, the goddess – if you have a favoured one, or just say the Universe, if none of the others suit).  This magick is sealed. So mote it be.”

Spend a few moments bringing up within yourself the desire to see your business succeed.  Visualise it being successful, making all the money you could ever need.  See yourself as the most successful businesswoman or man you’ve ever known.  Bring up every ounce of belief within you that your business will be successful not just now, but always.  See yourself always making the right business decisions in order to make it successful.  Get really excited about your success. Own it!  When you feel you are ready, say:

“Slow business be gone
I (we) need business success and money to come
Business was weak
Now business is strong
Bring customers in need
of my (our) services (or goods) agreed
Let money & success come fast
And let money & success last
Let our success harm none
But to help all who come!”
So mote it be!

Allow your gold candle to burn for an hour before extinguishing (or if it’s a small spell candle, until it burns out on its own).  Keep your talisman on your desk by the computer if that is where you do your business or in the till at your shop, or under the telephone if that is where your business is done.  NEVER allow the talisman to be opened and always leave it where business is done.

I know this spell works as I did it for a company I once worked for that was in over-draught when I did the spell and within a very few days, we had business like never before and money pouring in.  This did go on for a few months until one night after I had left, some twit took the talisman from underneath my phone and emptied it!  Business went down the swanee after that and I was made redundant about a year later due to lack of money.  Ah well…

So my best wishes go with you as you endeavour to make a little extra money for the bills or to bring your business to success!  Lesson Number 3?  See Lesson Number 2 again  Good Luck and Blessed be )O(

What Dreams May Come (or what do our Spirits get up to at night?)

Dream Reading

How many times have you heard a friend say, or have even said it yourself, “I never dream”.  You must simply change the wording of your statement to “I never remember dreams” as it has been proven scientifically that everybody dreams.  Dreams have been documented for centuries.  Whether you have read the Bible or not, you will have heard stories of how angels visited prophets and others in their dreams.  Nothing has changed, really.

There are almost as many theories as to why we dream as there are dreams themselves.  The boffins (scientists) would have us all believe that dreams are just brainwaves and synapses and such, just firing away in our heads, putting forth all manner of gibberish.  I never believed that for a minute.  Dreams are much too important for us to excuse them so lightly.  Please do not take me as knowledgeable about the Bible, nor that I believe everything written in it.  It is a book written mainly by mere men, recounting the history of the World at that time and religious phenomena, family histories, stories, etc that have been told and re-told so often through so many different accounts that it really makes me wonder at times did much of any of it happen the way it is told.  Especially since King James I got his paws on it.  As many know, King James, back in 1600’s England was responsible for re-writing some of the original history of the bible as well as adding his select passages about not suffering a witch to live, etc. I rest my case.

Ah, well, I’m not writing this about King James, nor the Bible per se.  I’m writing about dreams and why they happen.  Many agree that we live on one plane of existance — the Earthly plane. There is, above us, the Elemental Plane, then the Astral Plane There are actually many planes of existance that quantum physics boffins are still investigating and proving, but I’m not a quantum physics expert, so let’s for the sake of our purposes, stick to the Earthly/Elemental/Astral planes.  Most people will agree that we each have a soul, or spirit within us that, in spite of our brains appearing to do all the thinking, the spirit is what wills us to carry on.  A saying I heard a long time ago describes us best, I think:  “We are spiritual beings having a human experience”.  In other words, I think we’ve been around a lot longer than the present, and will be around much longer than the bodies we inhabit now.  Which brings me closer to the subject at hand…dreams.

Our bodies which we now inhabit on the Earthly plane are not able to keep pace with our Spirits, nor were ever intended to.  Some believe that we were gods at one point in time and the Divine Spirit, or God [or God and Goddess as I believe], put us on Earth to learn.  We kept our Spirits, our true selves, but are having to live out a human existance.  Punishment? I don’t know.  But, that is not the point, either.  There are too many beliefs as to why we’re here to debate.  I just want to give you the reason, to my belief, as to why we dream – and what they mean.

When our bodies sleep, our Spirits do not.  It may be as well that some folk do not remember their dreams as there may be no telling what our Spirits get up to whilst they are free of “us”.  In the Elemental Plane above the Earthly plane, it is believed that our Earthly, human thoughts print a pattern of what is real, but also imagined.  If you think about how, for instance, anime artists, cartoonists, sci-fi writers and the like came up with mechanised armour for characters years ago and now those things are being built for actual use, perhaps you can see how the pattern for things is created in the mind of a person, then printed on the Elemental Plane and thus comes into being.  I think it is a good case for the old adage, “Be careful what you wish for”!  As Witches, you are all aware of how manifestation works, I am sure, therefore we won’t go into it here as that is a whole other blog in itself.

As you may be able to begin seeing, our Spirits are able to travel through the Elemental Plane and onto the Astral Plane.  Those planes of existence do not merely waft around in some far-off dimension doing nothing.  There is just as much happening there as here, perhaps so much more so.  We can not only visit the Elemental Plane in our “sleep” but our Spirits are able to visit the Astral Plane as well.  So, as you “dream”, you may find yourself in one World one moment, and another completely different World the next!  You may visit another time, as well.  Time has been proven not to be in a straight line as we might well believe (it looks that way, doesn’t it?), and I can attest that I have been in many different eras myself!

I think the most important thing to do, if you want to remember your dreams, is to write them down upon waking.  I know you’ve heard it before, still, if you want someone who is able to help you sort out your dream, all the details you can remember are very important.  Colours, numbers, writing, were there men and/or women in your dream? Was it day or night?  Was it colourful and pleasing or was it dark and dreary?  Were there animals, birds?  What sounds did you hear?  Even if you were having a drink in a pub or smoking a cigarette…it is all important!

Many people I’ve helped in reading their dreams tell me they had a “nightmare”.  No, your Spirit had a scary experience possibly and scary experiences are not always (in fact hardly ever) harbingers of gloomy prophesy.  Dreaming of death, seeing yourself in your own coffin…not to worry, it isn’t bad news. There are also certain days of each month when whatever you dreamed is not to be entertained according to those who follow Avesta, Globa, Vronsky, and Veda (I’ll explain those another time).  And, in some rare cases, what you ate/watched/read shortly before retiring can influence some pretty strange things in your psyche during the night!

So, if you’ve had a dream that has you wondering whether you should pay attention to it or not, and would like to know what it means, feel free to email me at isabella@wytchencrafts.org.uk.  Or, if you know someone whom you trust and has read dreams for you before, contact that person.  Thank you for reading and if this has helped, please give it a “like”, Tweet to your friends, or share it on Facebook!

Many thanks for reading and Blessed be )O(
